Awkward Sun Tan
Muscle Group(s) Stretched: Shoulders (shoulder extension)
Muscle Group(s) Strengthened: n/a
Type of Stretch: Active Static
Difficulty: All-Levels
Suggested Prerequisites: none
This is one of my go-tos for a passive shoulder extension stretch that stretches the front of the shoulder and chest.
How To
Step 1
Start sitting on the on the floor. Plant your hands behind you, about shoulder-width apart (wider is OK if that feels better) with palms down, fingers facing away.
Step 2
Crawl your hands backwards or scoot your butt forwards until you start to feel a stretch in the front of your shoulders. If you feel any discomfort on your elbows, slide your hands closer to your butt and bend your elbows, trying to point them straight back.
Hold this stretch for 15-20 seconds.
Modifications
Need to make it easier?
Keep the hands closer to your butt.
Spread the arms a bit wider than shoulder-width apart.
Want to make it harder?
Let your head drop back (only if this feels OK on your neck!) to add a bit of gentle pressure from the weight of your head.
